YCNI:M / Number One

ross

A collaboration between yourcodenameis:milo, Name and Sasa Savic. It was performed for the first time at the ‘2020 Project’ in Newcastle in November 2003. The live work combines a taut instrumental post-rock soundtrack with animated photographs following a narrative order. It was also performed for the opening weekend of The Sage Gateshead.

This edit combines archive footage from The Sage Gateshead performance.

Review

‘Number One’ is a collaborative audiovisual performance by Newcastle based designers/artists Name, UK band Yourcodenameis:milo and Bosnian photographer Sasa Savic. Performed at the 2020 event as part of the 2003 AV Festival, and then again at the opening weekend of The Sage Gateshead in February 2005, this rousing performance is a symphonic intermingling of music and image.

Name and Savic’s striking black and white visual work illustrates the city of Sarajevo. The vigour and optimism of life after the wars of the 1990′s is rendered lyrically in the simple streets scenes and stark faces of the residents of this distinctive cosmopolis.

Yourcodenameis:milo perfectly score these filmic scenes with well designed chord evolutions and warm guitar mechanics. The intelligent textures of their sound transport the performance into a deeper meditative realm. At once rangy, belligerent, and yet harmonious, Yourcodenameis:milo display genuine glimmers of brilliance in a taut well constructed performance.

THE HISTORY OF JOHN PEEL / KATS KARAVAN

There’s been plenty released to celebrate DJ John Peel’s legacy and this expansive four-disc set tries to replicate the magic of the quintessential John Peel show. By that we mean throwing the tough techno of Dave Clarke up against the delicate melancholy of Tindersticks or the righteous roots of Linton Kwesi Johnston against the twee jangle of early Pulp. This 74 tracker covers the period from the late 60s through to Peel’s death in 2004 and is even inter-cut with some classic Peel patter. One hit wonders, cult classics and soon to be superstars are all here. It’s low on the prog, grindcore, African and ragged electronica he delighted in, but is still the best representation of an evening with Peel outside those dusty cassettes recorded off the radio at the time.

Non other than yourcodenameis:milo feature at Track 14 on the Kat’s Karavan Box Set with ‘I Am Connecting Flight‘ from there John Peel Session.
