PM / This Is A Fix

THE AUTOMATIC – THIS IS A FIX

This Is a Fix is the second album by The Automatic, and the first with Paul Mullen. It is due for release on 25 August 2008. The band has worked with producer Don Gilmore in Los Angeles, but were disappointed with these sessions, and instead worked with Butch Walker at Sage and Sound Recording in Los Angeles then back in Cardiff with Richard Jackson and London with Stephen Harris.

The Automatic began work in 2006 on the follow-up to previous album Not Accepted Anywhere, however after the departure of Alex Pennie and joining of Paul Mullen, the completed recordings of such songs as “Steve McQueen” and “Revolution” – which featured Alex Pennie providing synths and vocals – were shelved and later re-recorded with Paul Mullen. Writing took place sporadically – with songs originating from both before and after Mullen’s joining.

The album spawned only one single “Steve McQueen“, however “Magazines” and “Secret Police” were originally planned for release as singles. This Is A Fix leaked onto the internet a month before release, it was also hindered by online distribution issues – which saw both the single “Steve McQueen” and album get released late across sites such as itunes and 7digital.

PM / Paul Joins “The Automatic”

AutoInfoPic2

The Automatic are all super excited about the new album and have been holed up in their Cardiff studio finishing off the writing and doing some demoing of the new material. They will shortly decamp to Los Angeles to record what will now be one of the most eagerly awaited albums of next year.

The band is composed of Robin Hawkins on vocals, bass and synthesizers, James Frost on guitar, synthesizers, backing vocals and occasional bass, Iwan Griffiths on drums and Paul Mullen on vocals, guitar and synthesizer – since 2007. Mullen joined after the departure of Alex Pennie who provided synthesizer, percussion and vocals.

Frost wrote in his blog at the time:

“Hello! As you may have heard, Paul Mullen (yourcodenameis:Milo) has joined the band. We were planning this news for today but it somehow got out a bit early. But here you go, from the horses mouth, this is the new line-up. Since returning to the UK from our American tour this summer weve been focusing on a second album, there’s about 20 tracks demoed, half of which were written with Paul aswell. Its been a very exciting 6 weeks so far and were gona start the real album recordings very soon! Lastly it’s pretty important to mention that Paul isn’t a direct replacement for Pennie. He’s playing his guitar on most tracks, there are some vocal moments from him too. I guess that was kinda obvious really but i had read a few things on the web suggesting he was going to to be the new keyboard player. There will be plenty of keyboards on the new record though, worry not. Were sharing the electronic duties between us, open to anyone and everyone! Its sounding huge. Were very much looking forward to touring again next year and the future in general. Expect photos and studio vids next week!! KYEP…

Frost xx”
