YCNI:M / Number One

A collaboration between yourcodenameis:milo, Name and Sasa Savic. It was performed for the first time at the ‘2020 Project’ in Newcastle in November 2003. The live work combines a taut instrumental post-rock soundtrack with animated photographs following a narrative order. It was also performed for the opening weekend of The Sage Gateshead.

This edit combines archive footage from The Sage Gateshead performance.

Review

‘Number One’ is a collaborative audiovisual performance by Newcastle based designers/artists Name, UK band Yourcodenameis:milo and Bosnian photographer Sasa Savic. Performed at the 2020 event as part of the 2003 AV Festival, and then again at the opening weekend of The Sage Gateshead in February 2005, this rousing performance is a symphonic intermingling of music and image.

Name and Savic’s striking black and white visual work illustrates the city of Sarajevo. The vigour and optimism of life after the wars of the 1990′s is rendered lyrically in the simple streets scenes and stark faces of the residents of this distinctive cosmopolis.

Yourcodenameis:milo perfectly score these filmic scenes with well designed chord evolutions and warm guitar mechanics. The intelligent textures of their sound transport the performance into a deeper meditative realm. At once rangy, belligerent, and yet harmonious, Yourcodenameis:milo display genuine glimmers of brilliance in a taut well constructed performance.

The Automatic return with the third single from their Tear The Signs Down. A song that doesn’t take too seriously, a fun shout-along punk pop track that travels at 100 mph, it’s a fun track to add to that Summer playlist. Due for digital release only on June 20 2010, and was recorded at Warwick Hall, Cardiff.

The debut release from Young Legionnaire. This is detuned, subtly technical stoner indie. It’s fucking heavy and loud but catchy and tuneful.

PM / Welcome ★ Young Legionnaire

Young Legionnaire are a British post-hardcore band made up of Milo’s Paul Mullen, Bloc Party’s Gordon Moakes, and Dean Pearson. The band’s original drummer was Will Bowerman of Brontide, I Was A Cub Scout and La Roux’s live drummer.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cce7FeJXI_8&w=600&h=250]

In 2006, Yourcodenameis:milo started a collaborations project called “Print is Dead Vol. 1“, the idea being bands would go up to the YCNI:Milo studio in Newcastle and spend no longer than one day writing and recording a song for a record. Gordon Moakes was among the musicians who took part in the project, recording a track with the band called “Wait A Minute”. This started the idea of working together again, although commitments with their other bands had meant that they did not have time to. When Yourcodenameis:milo went on hiatus in 2007, Mullen joined The Automatic as a guitarist and vocalist, with Moakes continuing with Bloc Party.

During 2009, Moakes and Mullen started the band, with La Roux’s live drummer Will Bowerman completing the line up. In December 2009, with Bloc Party on hiatus and both The Automatic and La Roux inactive over the Christmas break, the band entered the studio. In January 2010, the group were revealed to be named “Young Legionnaire” and they played their first show at the end of January in London.On the 16th of August 2010, the band released their first single, the double A Side “Colossus/Iron Dream” on both limited edition vinyl and in .mp3 format on Holy Roar Records.
